Rail Travel Tours, in conjunction with Canada’s National History Society can take you to view the fantastic scenery and the fall colours of Ontario’s Superior region with great heritage experiences on a tour offered no where else. We travel roundtrip from Toronto through the Muskoka region and into the rugged beauty of the Canadian Shield by Motor Coach to Sudbury where we explore world class attractions such as Dynamic Earth. Then board VIA's LAKE SUPERIOR isolated rail service to travel through the picturesque and rugged Superior Region to White River, where past tours have seen moose in the swamps, bears in the woods and forests full of colour. The trip back to Toronto includes a visit to Gravenhurst and the lunch cruise on the RMS Segwun - the oldest steam powered vessel still operating in the world - for some great fall views of Lake Muskoka. Bring your camera and a sense of adventure as the fall colours and northern hospitality await you.
DAY 1 – THURSDAY
Morning meet & greet at Toronto’s Union Station. Depart Toronto by motor coach to travel north for a guided tour featuring the state and dining rooms, kitchens and even cargo holds of the former Canadian Pacific steamship the SS Keewatin (that returned to Canada in 2012) Maritime Museum at Port McNicoll and enjoy lunch in town here before continuing north and enjoying the fall scenery of the Muskoka Region before arriving in Sudbury and enjoy a group welcome supper here. Overnight downtown Sudbury overlooking the fall colours among the city skyline.
DAY 2 – FRIDAY
Enjoy Breakfast a the hotel before you visit Sudbury’s Dynamic Earth attraction to learn about the areas heritage and nickel mining through the years. Time to enjoy lunch with views of the Nickel Mining operations of today followed by an afternoon to visit other heritage attractions including a visit R & R Restored Classic Cars and the Northern Ontario Railway Museum in the northern most tip of Sudbury called Capreol and enjoy a home cooked dinner in the area before returning to our hotel. This evening there will be presentations, right in the hotel, for the group by distinguished Sudbury photographers showcasing images of “The 4 seasons of Sudbury & Region”. Overnight downtown Sudbury overlooking the city skyline.
DAY 3 – SATURDAY
Enjoy Breakfast at the hotel before our day trip on VIA’s Rail 's Sudbury - White River Rail Diesel Car service on the CPR mainline to White River through the rugged “Superior” Region of Ontario. Fantastic views of pristine wilderness and small communities that are only accessible from the train we will travel on. Places like Biscotasing where British citizen Archibald Stanley lived as he transformed into the noted naturalist known as Grey Owl and the rail community of Chapleau. After arriving in White River enjoy a community organized “Fall/Potluck Supper” meal (included) at White River. We will learn about the heritage of this remote community and their most famous former resident a bear cub named after a World War 1 soldier's home town of "Winnipeg" later immortalized by an author of children's stories. After dinner there will also the opportunity to visit the White River Museum
Overnight (Saturday) at our hotel in White River.
DAY 4 – SUNDAY
Enjoy some light breakfast on the train as we again travel on VIA Rail’s eastbound Rail Diesel Car remote service to Sudbury again viewing the scenery along Lake Windermere and watching for wildlife along the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve and more to realize why this train may be the most scenic best kept secret rail journey in Northern Ontario. Overnight again in Sudbury.
DAY 5 – MONDAY
Enjoy Breakfast at the hotel before our morning transfer to Gravenhurst to enjoy the lunch cruise on the RMS Segwun with fantastic fall views of Lake Muskoka and a visit the Muskoka Boat & Heritage Centre museum to view the fantastic collection of heritage boats and fantastic gift shop. After the visit to Gravenhurst again travel through the scenic Muskoka Region of lakes and cottages before scheduled to arrive this afternoon back in downtown Toronto for the end of this relaxing rail tour experience.
